Winter Gardening - Basics for Beginners

Growing vegetables in winter is really a matter of collection does not grow so much. The idea is to grow vegetables in late summer and then come to collect during the winter, protecting them from exposure to weathering, denying them water. The water in the plant cells is the one that freezes and kills the irrigation of plants, they must stop when the cold begins to set in

E 'must choose Hardy vegetables - think cabbage, broccoli and cabbage - theCruciferae. You can not grow or summer vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini in the winter.

Winter Vegetables

Some of the resistant vegetables leeks and cabbage. Many of the Greens as Asian bok choy are also resistant.

Porro is a plant commonly used in soups and stews, and can be substituted in many recipes for onion. This system gives us the root for consumption. The lower white part of theStengel is often very nice for the "round" cut into slices in a soup, or it can be very similar to an onion in roasted vegetables and the like. Leeks can be "winter over" in areas that are higher than 4 and, if given some protection.

Kale is a green like Swiss chard, mustard or turnip. We eat the leaves of the plant. It is used in soups, stews and ready for use as a steamed green alone. It 's very durable and can be susceptible to frost and winter weather with little or no protection Zone 6 and above. Since a little protection in zones 4 Kale survive the winter.

I picked lettuce Bok Choi in my cold greenhouse at least 14 F. can easily go below zero, and radishes, peas, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage are very cold tolerant also.

Protection in the winter

The basic resources that are necessary to protect plants from winter weather coverage online, garden tunnel, unheatedSerre> and polytunnels. Many can be made from simple materials.

In warmer climates is a single cover all that is necessary. In colder climates, such as areas 4 and below, double covering is necessary. A cold frame with a transparent plastic cover additional works very well, but a house of tires or a greenhouse structure will be much more room to work and keeps you out of the winter weather.

The clear plastic cover of a garden structureprotects plants harsh winter winds, allowing the collection of sunlight into heat to help the industry in which the plants grow. Do not use raised beds during the winter, as it will give its heat to the environment very quickly.

the cold and the crops of vegetables on a flat surface needs to be done, the earth's natural heat to be clearly captured by the layers. This is one reason why other root crops and vegetables close to the groundare the best choice for winter gardening - cold frame can be easily covered with a lid or a number.

Think of each layer of plastic material such as a blanket. Use a blanket for the cold, the cold much, use two.

Vintage

Most of what you will harvest the winter. Planted and grown to be the largest part of the question. You have to save that for the spring.

Until the plants watered whileWinter, they should be in relatively decent shape for harvest. The key is to allow them to warm up a bit 'before the harvest. Do not remain well above freezing for a few hours before groped collection.

This could mean waiting a day or two between harvests, but if you wait until it warms up in the context of this "roof", you will reap a pulp. Let the sun warm his work and stuff for a couple of hours before the collection of cultures from the crunchy dimension of lifeRefrigerator.
